How Does Geothermal Heating & Cooling Work?

Geothermal HVAC systems make use of the heat trapped within the ground. For example, during winter, the ground several feet below the surface is warmer than the air outside. Geothermal heating systems use this heat to warm refrigerant or antifreeze and water contained within underground piping. The fluid travels up to a condenser unit aboveground where heat is transferred to the air that circulates throughout your home.

When temperatures rise, this process reverses. The warm air in your home is cooled by the refrigerant in the system. The refrigerant absorbs the heat energy and transfers it to the ground.

Since the ground is now cooler than the surrounding environment, the liquid within the system loses heat as it travels. Then, it returns to the surface to absorb more heat from your indoor space.

What Types of Geothermal Solutions are Available?

There are 4 main types of geothermal systems, including vertical, horizontal, pond or lake, and open loop systems.

Vertical systems use deep boreholes, typically 100-400 feet deep, to house piping that circulates the heat transfer fluid. Vertical systems are ideal for properties with limited land area.

Horizontal systems involve laying tubing (horizontal ground loops) in trenches anywhere between 3-10 feet deep. They require more land area but are often less expensive to install than vertical systems. Horizontal ground loops can be configured in several patterns to maximize efficiency in the available space.

A pond or lake geothermal system is another type of geothermal heat pump configuration. It uses water instead of the ground for transferring heat to and from a home. Coils of pipe are submerged in a nearby body of water, such as a pond or lake, at least 8 feet below the surface. These coils contain the heat transfer fluid, usually a mixture of water and antifreeze.

An open loop system uses water from a pond, lake, stream, or underground well as the heat exchange fluid instead of an antifreeze mixture. This water circulates directly through the heat pump system. After passing through the heat pump, the water either returns to the original source or goes to another site.

Benefits of Geothermal Systems

There are many advantages that come with having a ground source heating and cooling system. Some include:

  • Geothermal units take advantage of a natural resource to maintain the temperature of your home. This helps ensure a steady indoor climate all year long.
  • These systems don’t burn up fossil fuels, unlike many other HVAC units. They only need electricity to operate, which makes them highly energy efficient. In fact, geothermal technology is one of the most eco-friendly options for heating and cooling on the market.
  • Installing a geothermal heat pump system can be costly at first. However, the energy savings add up substantially over time.
  • They offer long-term heating and cooling solutions. In most cases, the heat pump will last about 20 years while the underground system can last up to 50 years.
